The “Slama – land an festival” is an art concept, which unifies a manifestation and the space of artistic creation. Besides that it combines cultural and traditional inheritance, using natural recourses and promoting the principles of maintainable development. Under the blue sky, on a field close to the “Nature Park Kopački rit”, the artists create in one week their sculptures out of thousands straw bales.
The festival successfully combines contemporary sculptural expression in straw, as a material which is characteristic and traditional in this region, with historical harvest customs, with what this project obtains a broader temporal and geographical dimension.
After the festival the sculptures, created by the artists, are placed on numerous location in the region, keeping so a direct reference to “Slama” and at the same time elevating public areas making Baranja a more interesting and unique touristic destination.
The international crew of artists gathers in Baranja in the middle of august, when the work on the field, with emphasis on team work and individuality, begins.
On the last day of the festival a big festivity, which gathers a lot of visitors from all over the country, is organized. Several cultural, traditional and artistic associations, musicians and craftsmen perform accompanied by a rich offer of traditional dainties of the region.
At sunset, as a sign of gratitude for the harvest, to the astonishment of all visitors the biggest sculpture gets light on fire.
